Influences and Inspirations
Inspired by nature, I create Quilt Art collages in an abstract improvisational style using a variety of fabrics, threads, and embellishments. Unlike traditional quilts; I piece, appliqué and embroider directly on a layered foundation of quilt batting or fabrics which results in immediate dimensionality.
Many of the textile collages I create are inspired by the style of Asian art displayed in the sacred center of a traditional Japanese home, Tokonoma alcoves. The Tokonomas was the place reserved for treasured items like scrolls and calligraphy, special kimonos, ikebana flower arrangements, miniature bonsai trees, and fine ceramics for tea ceremonies. The items displayed were changed for special occasions or according to the season.
